Specialization:
- Dr. Fernandez’ research explores public and private economic incentives for pollution control and natural resource protection on international and local scales. Environmental protection along international borders is one focus of Fernandez’ research to develop and empirically test game theory models to study the potential for neighboring countries such Canada, U.S., and Mexico to solve border water and air pollution problems. Funding from NSF, Commission on Environmental Cooperation, and the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation has led to several publications, some listed below.
- Research also includes analysis of economic incentives to address invasive species in a coordinated manner between importing and exporting countries hoping to protect biodiversity and trade, noting different aspects of uncertainty of costs and damages in terrestrial and marine environments.
