Research Description
- Animal waste from Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) is a significant contributor to the nitrate contamination of groundwater. To find the most efficient policy for nitrogen reduction, I build a whole-farm model of a dairy where the owner of the operation is a profit-maximizer subject to environmental regulations. The model includes components such as herd management, cropping system, irrigation methods option, nitrate cycling, and pollutant emissions. Different policies (e.g. input regulation VS. emission regulation) will be analyzed and evaluated.
