George and Hilda Liebig Environmental Sciences Scholarship for Undergraduate Excellence
    • 2016-2017: Katy Truong

Katy graduated from University of California in Spring 2017 with a Bachelors’ Degree in Environmental Sciences in Dr. Lin’s Lab. Her research focused on the Integrative Analysis of mRNA and microRNA Expression Profiles in Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells (BEAS-2B) Exposed to Organic Soluble Extract from Isoprene-Derived Secondary Organic Aerosol. She is currently working as a phlebotomist and a medical assistant at an Urgent Care in Irvine, California to enrich her clinical experiences and prepare for medical school. The George and Hilda Liebig Environmental Sciences award will be used to fund the fees and expenses to register for the MCAT exam in September 2017 towards achieving her goal as becoming a Doctor in Environmental Medicine field, where major scope of practice will focus on studying environmental pathology, the interactions between environment and human health, and the role of the environment in causing or mediating diseases.

    Rosemary Schraer Award
    • 2016-2017: Mariejo Plaganas

As 4th year Environmental Sciences major, I have been fortunate with the undergraduate research experience I’ve gained while at UCR. As an undergraduate in Dr. Samantha Ying’s lab, I have participated in mentored research that has allowed me to grow personally and intellectually through participation in research projects that incorporate practical approaches to real world issues pertaining aquifer sediments, as well as soil and groundwater contamination.

I have also been fortunate to have been involved in research opportunities at labs like the USDA Salinity Lab and Stanford University, which greatly enhanced and refined my lab skills and thought process involving approaches to multidisciplinary research. In the future, I aspire to become a soil scientist investigating metal contamination in groundwater and aquifer sediments. In addition to this, I hope to celebrate and increase interest in STEM with younger children to diversify the field of science.

    • Stolzy-Letey Environmental Sciences Scholarship for Undergraduates
      • 2016-2017: Eileen Lek

I am currently a 4th year Environmental Sciences major with a concentration in Environmental Toxicology. Throughout my experience at UCR, I have had the opportunity to engage in undergraduate research, internships, peer mentor programs, and attend a variety of conferences. It is within these experiences that I have been able to explore and confirm my interests in air pollution management, public health, and environmental justice.

As a research assistant in Dr. Jingsong Zhang's lab, I have gained experience with building spectrometers that will be sensitive enough to detect atmospheric HONO concentrations. With my past internships at the South Coast Air Quality Management District and the Office of Sustainability, I have been able to immerse myself in a variety of projects that have expanded my scope of understanding of the governmental and institutional complexities of environmental regulations. Moving forward, I envision my work to be dedicated to a more interdisciplinary approach in order to advocate for the communities that are disproportionately impacted by air pollution.
