Frank T. Bingham Memorial Fellowship in Soil Science
  • 2016-2017: Claudia Avila

Claudia is a second year PhD student in Samantha Ying's lab group. Her research is focused on investigating the fate of trace metals and carbon in agricultural soils under varying management practices. She is currently working on a UCOP project on the mechanisms controlling soil aggregate formation in orchard soils and implications for drought mitigation.

What Bingham Award will be used for: Claudia was accepted into the Canadian Light Source (CLS) summer school and part of this award will fund her expenses for that trip. This program is aimed to prepare students for synchrotron-based data analysis and sample preparation as well as beam line proposal writing workshops that will likely play a role in Claudia's future career. Additionally, these funds will assist Claudia in analyzing her samples at CLS, more specifically looking at the carbon chemistry of soil aggregates.

  • 2017-2018: Alexander Frie

The Albert Marsh Environmental Sciences Scholarship will be used to fund my attendance of the 2017 American Association for Aerosol Research Conference in Raleigh North Carolina. At this conference, I will present my work investigating the chemical drivers of optical properties of a variety of organic aerosols. Aerosols are known to affect the earth's radiation budget, and therefore climate change and weather, but the size of the aerosol effect is poorly understood. My work applies aerosol mass spectroscopy and component analysis methods to better understand how the chemistry of an aerosol controls how aerosols interact with radiation. This work will lead to a better understanding of the effects of aerosols and their importance within the climate system.
